Painting with stripes...

I love the look of striping a wall with paint!  It adds interest and fun!

Our beach house on Cape Cod is small, so I needed to be careful about overwhelming a whole room (or wall) with stripes...BUT I decided to add some striped pizazz to our our daughters' closet....a trial run so to speak :)  I was pleased with the result.  So were my girls!

Striping is very easy!  Just make sure you measure precisely so that your stripes are equal width (unless you are doing multi-colored stripes that are different sizes).  Also, use a level to help ensure your stripes are straight.  Then, tape off the sides of the stripes (a little tedious because you have to make sure the tape is very straight!!) and then the easy part...paint!  Let your stripes dry and then repaeat the procedure with the second color of paint you have chosen.

The girl's room is sea coast blue with the trimwork in white.  I chose to use the same colors in the closet...BUT it would also be fun to use accent colors from their comforters or curtains :)

Of course, for those of you who know me, I couldn't stop at just one closet!!  Also striped the entryway coat closet...

And an accent wall in our hallway...

Next on the list???  The laundry room :)  Then I think I need to move on to another look - don't want to feel like we live in a jail!

HAPPY STRIPING!!

Ally's TWEEN Bedroom Reveal!

Not a little girl.  Not a teenager.
Here is the perfect bedroom for the TWEEN in your life :)

Here were Ally's requests:

1. Kelly Green
2.  Navy Blue
3. White
4.  Refrigerator
5.  Decorative Strands of Lights
6.  Chalkboard Area

A room in the basement was finished to enable Ally to have her own "space"...(she had been sharing a room with her 8 year old little sister).

The walls were painted Super White by Benjamin Moore to keep the space as light as possible due to its basement location.

To add some fun and color, I painted one thick stripe around her room in Kensington Blue by Benjamin Moore.  I then added large boxes in  Lucky Green by Sherwin Williams.  These boxes were strategically placed over her headboard, desk, dresser and bookcase.

Behind her door, I added a Chalkboard Area which she has filled with her favorite quotes :)

Ally & I painted an old desk/table in the Kensington Blue and placed her refrigerator (donated by her cousin Megan) underneath. We also added a photo board and mini chalkboard above her desk to keep her organized.  I found a FUN square blue mirror at Home Goods on CLEARANCE (love that!!) and it fit perfectly over Ally's dresser.  I also found a fun wall bookcase at Home Goods that I painted in the Super White and then antiqued the finish.  Ally selected a duvet cover from Pottery Barn Teen - a fun pattern of Navy and White!  The kelly green throw pillows were also found at Home Goods.

Here is Ally's TWEEN Bedroom Reveal :)

(Note:  her puppy Katy loves her new room too!)

It's all about the CHAIR!!!

Found this hounds tooth upholstered chair at Lazy Boy and it inspired me!  I loved it!  It is very neutral so I thought some splashes of pinks were in order.  The best part about this chair is if you get tired of the pinks you can easily change it up with other accessories without breaking the bank.  AND the chair is currently on SALE!!

DIY Fun with Chalkboard Paint!

WHY SHOULD TEACHERS HAVE ALL THE FUN?  Chalkboard paint is a great way to add some character to a room. PLUS it is inexpensive and easy to apply. You can purchase it at any Home Depot, Lowes, or paint store.  In fact, it is so popular now that many craft stores carry it as well.

Check out these great DIY Ideas:

1.  Apply a coat of chalkboard paint to a favorite tray,  then hang it on a wall or use it as a serving piece you can label.  Write your party menu, grocery list, or a nice welcome note...

2.  Add chalkboard paint above your bar & let people know what is on tap or what the drink options are.  CHEERS!

3.  Painting the front or back of one or two of your kitchen cabinets is very popular right now.  It allows you to write messages to your family, and stay organzed by keeping grocery lists and to-do's in view.

4.  Don't forget your home office!  Keep track of appointments, to-do's, phone messages...you name it. And, yes, chalkboard paint comes in COLORS!

5.  HERBS!  Label your potted herbs by painting the rim of your terrecotta pots in chalkboard paint...cute!

6.  NO Grown Ups Allowed!  Add a chalkboard paint wall - or in this case - walls to your children's playroom.  Let them imagine, create, and color...with little to no mess!

Online Design Services Available

ONLINE Design Plan Services are available through My Cozy Cape Cod.  These services can be as simple or as involved as your project requires.

Online Design Plan Services include:
1.  Personal Phone Consultations
2.  Customized descriptions, recommendations and pictures of proposed home improvement/home décor changes
3.  Inspiration Board including product list (shopping list), price list, source list of all customized recommendations
4.  Paint and/or Fabric recommendations
5.  Incorporation of your current pieces and décor that you wish to keep
6.  Furniture placement recommendations

------------------------------------------------
This is an example of a very simple DESIGN PLAN recently provided for a client:

The new built ins are FABULOUS!  The new navy and white furniture is SHARP.  I love your idea of adding accents of red and sea greens....GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS!

Here are the pictures of your living/kitchen area...all that's needed are some accessories to highlight some accent colors:

To start, I would introduce color with throw pillows.  I found the perfect choice - they are not too busy because you have stripes and a pattern already happening in your sofa and arm chairs, yet they help to introduce the accent colors you want highlighted in the room, and most importantly, on your new built ins.  I found these at www.oceanstyles.com and they are actually REASONABLE at $29.74 each...

In addition to the throw pillows, I would purchase a throw blanket in a solid red or solid sea green, and casually toss it over the arm of your sofa - this adds a pretty touch of color and also will come in handy on a chilly rainy day or cold winter night.  The throws shown below are from Pottery Barn (Cable Knit Throw, $79)...but can be easily found at discount home stores for much less :)

I would also introduce some more color in your kitchen with a set of Willow House Cinnabar Cannisters (Item # 41222, Set of Three $132.96).  These would be located in the corner where your toaster currently sits.  These cannisters will give you a pop of color in your kitchen to help your color choice flow in the connected rooms.

Notice, behind the cannisters in the picture above, the fabric covered book.  This is an easy do-it-yourself touch that we should incorporate into your kitchen as well.  I would use the same colors shown in the picture - your red and sea green - lots of beautiful fabrics available.  All I would need is three cookbooks (hardcover - I am sure you have some you either use at The Cape or some that could be spared for decor purposes only).  Again, this would help set the stage for your color scheme.

Now...THE BUILT INS!!  They are so beautiful that you do not want too much "stuff" on them.  I would keep it simple and classy with pops of your accent colors.

I would include the following:

1.  Your Favorite Beach reads!  How great to have some beach reads for friends who visit and want something to bring to the beach.  Remember - these books should vary in size and some should be placed vertically and some horizontally...most in hardcover preferrably.

2.  Frames!  You could choose a few frames that are in a beachy gray-washed stain and I would fill them with your favorite family and friend photos...all photos in black and white.  B&W photos can easily and inexpensively be ordered from Shutterfly.

3.  Christmas Tree Shops!  No Cape Cod built in would be complete without a few inexpensive starfish, shells, candleholders from the Christmas Tree Shoppes...whatever you fancy!

4.  Fabric Hardcover Books:  Again - same idea as kitchen cookbooks...same fabric to bring some commonality between two rooms.  This will also add some red to your shelves...lay them horizontally...

5.  Statement Pieces!  You should have a few statement pieces on your shelving.  The pieces will bring ooohhhs and ahhhs...here are a couple of my favorites:

Athena Crackle Vase (BELOW):  Gorgeous Greek Goddess on your very own shelves :)  By Willow House (Item #41550, $39.96)  This vase would be left empty (it is stylish enough to be a bookend or to stand alone) due to height of your bookshelves...you can fill it with pussy willows (so Cape Cod), branches, silver dollars...lots of options here...if you ever choose to move it elsewhere!

Lady Jane Bottleneck Vases (BELOW):  GORGEOUS Demijohn Bottles that are 100% beachy!  Easily stand alone!  By Willow House (ON SALE IN JANUARY ONLY!  Large in turquoise is $62.96, Small in apple is $40.96).  I would get both - they look great paired together or in separate spots on your shelving.

Wood Birdhouse (BELOW):  This birdhouse is sweet and adds a touch of something different to the typical built in shelving decor of books and frames.  Available through Pottery Barn (Small is $69...and plenty big enough at 22 inches high).

EXTRAS!  Of course, a "nice to have"...not a priority but would make a nice final touch....

1.  Bradford Lattice Lanterns (BELOW):  These are absolutely beautiful, worth every penny, lanterns that would be pretty on the floor in your living room....they could stand alone or be filled with dried flowers - tops tilt over!!  The wood is a weathered gray - Cape Cod classic!  You can even put a candle in them and bring them out onto your deck during parties!  By Willow House (Item #41420 Set of TWO:  $159.96)

I hope you had as much fun reading this as I had putting it together!!

Decorating with Black and White...

Sophisticated.  Dramatic.  Contrasting.

Using an all black and white color palette in a room certainly makes a statement!
View these rooms and tell me...do you like the black and white?  Or do you feel the urge to add a third color...something calming like pale pink or light blue, or maybe something bold like coral, red or kelly green.

Room #1:  The consistant color in this room allows for many different patterns to be used together...

(From:  bhg.com)

Room #2:  A calmer take on the contrasting colors.  Using solids makes this room gentler on the eye...

(From:  bhg.com)

Room #3:  A pretty bath...but what if that vase of flowers were a color???

(From bhg.com)

Room #4:  Pretty pattern and nice touches...(love the chandelier)

(From bhg.com)

Room #5:  With more white than black, this room makes a gentler statement...

(From bhg.com)

Room #6:  Striped Walls and Zebra Print stair runner....fun!

(From housebeautiful.com)

Room #7:  Hmmm...Love the bowl!  Love the wardrobe!  But...

(From:  marthastewart.com)

Room #8:  Classy!  Love the checkered floor and black counter tops!

(From traditionalhome.com)

So what's your vote... keep the rooms "as is" or add a third color?
